Sustainable Transportation is Critical to Good Real Estate Development
Last month, Jonathan Rose spoke at Washington DC’s National Building Museum on Green and Affordable Neighborhoods (see the video of his talk above). Rose, a real estate developer who specializes in creating high-density sustainable mixed-income urban developments, talks about the challenges and threats posed by climate change and the critical role of mass transit in creating green communities.

Europe 'unaware' of its water footprint
While Europe may take better care of its water resources than other continents, it in fact uses larger quantities via imports of goods such as cotton, beans or wood, which often come from regions that already suffer from water scarcity, argues a UN expert in an interview with EurActiv.

L’Ademe et la mission prospective du MEEDDAT ont lancé, mi-février, un appel à propositions de recherche sur le thème : « Repenser les villes dans une société Post Carbone ». Outre des éclairages spécifiques (inégalités sociales et territoriales, modes de vie, jeux d’acteurs...), une application territoriale est attendue avec la déclinaison d’un exercice Facteur 4 à l’échelle d’une ville.

Mike Davis « Privilégier l’espace public et le recyclage »
Le sociologue américain arpente les villes depuis quarante ans. Aujourd’hui, alors qu’elles sont devenues moteurs dans le réchauffement climatique, il appelle à une révolution urbaine globale.
Ethnologue et historien, Mike Davis est né aux Etats-Unis en 1946. Il travaille sur les problèmes d’urbanisme et d’environnement depuis les années 1980. L’auteur de City of Quartz, l’ouvrage qui l’a rendu célèbre en 1990, fait le point sur l’état du monde : élections américaines, écologie, villes du futur, projections énergétiques… Nous l’avons rencontré dans ses quartiers de San Diego en Californie.

Knoxville, Tenn. - Preparing for a Flood of Energy Efficiency Spending
Wrapping up an elaborate energy audit, Knoxville is about to find out which of 99 city buildings are wasting the most energy. It hopes to begin repairs this summer, just in time to catch a tsunami of federal stimulus money earmarked for such unglamorous tasks as replacing light bulbs and fixing leaky insulation.

Companies push for 'very low-energy buildings'
Governments need to communicate more clearly their objectives on improving the energy consumption of buildings, to give construction companies more certainty about future demand, according to a survey to be published later today. Si l’idée de rendre la ville durable est reprise à l’unisson, par des responsables politiques, associatifs, des scientifiques ou des acteurs du monde économique, notamment en Europe, elle fait aussi l’objet de nombreuses critiques. Tantôt « fourre-tout », nouvel alibi d’un mode de développement qui marcherait sur la tête, ou concept trop déclaratoire et pas assez concret, la ville durable ne serait pas la solution pertinente pour faire face aux grands défis environnementaux, économiques, sociaux, culturels et politiques de nos sociétés urbaines.

La partie thématique constitue le coeur de l’étude. Elle illustre la partie analytique par le biais de fiches de bonnes pratiques, mettant en valeur un projet de développement durable particulier dans plus de 50 villes européennes différentes, regroupées en 10 thématiques. L’idée est de montrer la diversité des applications du développement urbain durable, géographique comme thématique.

ICLEI opens its International Programme Centre in Bonn, Germany
It will act as a branch office of the ICLEI World Secretariat, which is located in Toronto (Canada). From the Bonn Centre, ICLEI will co-ordinate its programme on Business Relations, Climate Protection and EcoMobility, by hosting the Secretariat of the Global Alliance for EcoMobility - a global, cross-sectoral partnership for the integrated promotion of walking, cycling, wheeling and passenging (use of public transport). The City of Bonn has developed into a hub of international co-operation, particularly in the environment and sustainable development area. In addition to a number of other international organisations and institutions, the city currently hosts 16 United Nations institutions, and is also the seat of some of Germany's largest corporate players, most notably telecommunications and logistics companies.
