The LOW ENERGY HOTEL

This is IMAGINE. I loved it. Our concrete idea of saving energy and reaching our aims in 2020. Our story: The administrative wants to decrease the temperature in all hotels all over Europe - want a lower temperature in hotels. NGOs said, therefor we need display labels, certificates about energy consumption in every hotel for improving communication, information, for example from ECO. This is important for the public. Private sectors are investing in the new technology for the intelligent metering, that we will have special systems for efficiant heating and low heating. We also need knowledge, education for specialists, teacher, professors that they can act as multiplicator to teach other people about the technology, ... a snowball effect. citizens also have to do something in their hotels. They will pay for their energy consumptions in hotels. A flexible rate: if they use a lot of heating, energy and lights, warm water, they have to pay ,ore than people who are choosing a energy efficient way of behaviour. I coorporation with all different people from administrative, NGOs, citizens, private, academic they create a manual, guideline for everyone. Knowledge transfer, communication... . great. A lot of other actions are nessecary, not only changes in heating. Afterwards the administrative part is developing a roadmap for energy neutral hotels. The citizens want to have a hotel that produce energy. So in 2020 we have reached our aim, we have energy neutral hotels all over Europe. The next steps are then to transfer the idea of the hotel to other buildings like schools, houses, .... And we create a sustainable city in the end. VOILA. This is great.

And the best: we create this within an hour. So IMAGINE, what YOU can create in a week, in a year, with other people; all together!!!!!

What to change and why change things in my city?

This is the title of the 1st session of the seminar.

Aims:

  • Tackling the issue of mechanisms for change / lack of change
  • Describing what must change within a generation and what acts as an obstacle / a brake to us carrying it through.

Methodology:

  • A brainstorming session in groups of 6 people around the following questions: Within a generation,
  • What do I no longer want in my city?
  • What do I have to change in my city?
  • What prevents change?
  • What do I like in my city that I wish to keep?
  • Reporting, Discussion, Structuring of ideas

A problem of definition?

At the beginning of this seminar we encountered the word "Territoire". It is important that we define what we mean by "Territoire" in French because the word territory probably has a very different meaning. It's certainly important that we reach a common definition or understanding.
Does the word territoire define a geographical zone, a physical system, or a cultural zone, or political entity? What are the boundaries of a territoire? Is it an open or a closed system? How does the word region relate to the concept of territoire? How are regions and territoires different?

IMAGINE 2nd seminar started yesterday

The 2nd edition of the IMAGINE seminar will focus this year on the following question: How can we change our mindsets by getting inspired from sustainable districts ? Big issue, isn't it? During 3 days, we will explore with a group of 40 people, the processes that make moving towards a more sustainable energy future in our cities possible.
We have in our hands all we need to achieve the necessary changes: technologies, services, regulations, market and tax instruments, financial resources that we are often unaware of, and of course, the intelligence of men and women.
Some initiatives are showing us the way forward, for example the new districts that have come into being over the last few years in cities like Hanover, Freiburg, Helsinki, Utrecht, London and elsewhere. Others are in the pipeline. All are laboratories for our future. They all combine a (very) low energy use with high levels of renewable and decentralised energy supply, and all attach much importance to being pleasant places to live in.
How can we learn from these examples by considering the following issues: what made the decision and construction of such districts possible? What enabled change?
